Ferry Lane Estate is very green – we have over hundreds of trees, over 16 species of birds nest here and many more visit to feed. We have areas of wildflowers and gardens that support many butterflies. On the mammal front, we have maybe three species of bats in our woodland and more on the river. We have foxes and squirrels, and we have hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are a threatened species and we have a responsibility to look after them and ensure they can move around and feed across the estate. And of course we have many birds, including kingfishers and herons, fish and other creatures on the river and Walthamstow Wetlands next door.
Trees and greenery help to reduce temperatures and provide welcome shade during heat-waves which are getting ever hotter. Wildlife is also suffering from climate change and needs our help.
