An application has been received by Haringey. Reference: HGY/2025/0818

To view the plans go to https://publicregister.haringey.gov.uk/pr/s/detail/a0iTu0000013uEn – and then click on Files. The most useful documents are DAS (Design Access Statements) Parts 1 and 2 which have clear diagrams showing the proposed changes.  

The original plans agreed by the Planning Committee when Tottenham Hale Station was upgraded included a footbridge from the station over the tracks and into Hale Village. This was to relieve overcrowding on the pavement along Ferry Lane as you go over the bridge on the Hale Village side. There have been major problems in finding the funding for this and alternative proposals were brought forward last year, but rejected by the Planning Committee. 

There has been further consultation, including with the FLAG committee, and some changes made to those proposals. 

Residents in Hale Village feel let down and many will continue to press for the new bridge – which FLAG had also supported. However, the new proposals do bring benefits for our residents. 

Next to Files is Comments and clicking on this allows you to object to the proposals, support them or just make a comment. The end of the consultation period is 2nd May 2025. The target decision date is 21st May 2025.

Below are some of the issues you may want to highlight:

1. FLAG’s suggestion that the 20mph limit be extended from The Hale to the borough boundary has been partly accepted. The proposals take it to Mill Mead Road.
2. The first set of traffic lights, which many people use to cross to the station, currently have no pedestrian phase. It is proposed to make this a proper pedestrian traffic light controlled crossing. This is very welcome and will make getting to the station much safer for residents.
3. The footpath on the Hale Village side is being widened as that is where the overcrowding is most severe. The footpath on our side is being made slightly narrower.
4. A lot of the cycle routes are being tidied up and made safer – best to look at the plans for the detail. The crossing from the Retail Park over to the station is changing to include a section for cyclists (a toucan crossing) – so they can get onto the cycle lane on the station side of Ferry Lane. 
5. A major concern raised by FLAG was the removal of any barrier between cyclists and pedestrians. The proposals will keep a barrier between cyclists and cars – which is important – but there won’t be a similar barrier between cyclists and pedestrians – just different levels and surfaces. The danger to pedestrians from cyclists on the footpath was raised by FLAG, but doesn’t seem to have been taken on board. Many bikes now are electric, so much faster and heavier than traditional cycles. They are also often delivery bikes, so in a hurry. 
6. We had asked for better signage at the station and signs to tell cyclists to stay off the footpath. This doesn’t seem to have been properly picked up in the section on signage and wayfinding. 
7. The lighting over the bridge is to be improved. This is welcome.
8. There will be additional CCTV – including to cover the stairs from Ferry Lane to Harris Lebus Way. This should help make the area safer.
9. The area on the corner outside the station as you turn onto Ferry Lane is being enhanced to allow more space for pedestrians. This is to be welcomed.
10. The bus stop on the Hale Village side is to be a ‘floating bus stop’. This is quite common, but not popular with everyone.
